Student answer (Band 5.5)

Numerous learner want to learn English independently without attending a formal course they want to do self study. It is difficult to manage their studies without help of any assistance as students are not aware of everything. I totally agree with this statement because self-stidy will hinder the process of gaining actual knowledge and many complex grammatical rules may remain incomplete without the assistance.

A major portion of students choose English as a optional subject for self-study as they want to study independently without involving themselve in any regular course. The problem occurs when study cannot gain proper knowledge through self-study because they do not build the base of grammars; they just read it and try to memorize without understanding. As a result, due to lack of knowledge on basic English, students cannot gain the actual theories which may impact their learning process on the next level. For example, students who choose to study English as an optional course independently, scores 30% in a general test of basic grammatical rules.

Without attending in a formal course, students find difficulties to manage their studies because there are no tutor to teach them. Students cannot understand the meaning of complex words which hinders them to gain mastery in vocabulary. Furthermore, to understand the complex grammatical rules we need the help of tutor, students who try to learn by their own, may find it difficult. Without guidance of any tutor, the journey of learning English through self-learning remains incomplete as students memorize the complex garammars without knowing the depth knowledge. Spelling Bee competition is the major example where students are tested based on their grammar knowledge and a few students do well who learn through self-study because of memorizing rather than understanding.

In conclusion, there is no denying that students will not achieve proper knowledge without any assistance because the complex topics will remain beyond their understanding and the basic of grammar will not develop properly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: “I totally agree,” and the conclusion maintains that view. You address the central issue by explaining that independent learners may lack foundational grammar knowledge and may struggle with complex vocabulary without a tutor. The examples about a basic grammar test and the Spelling Bee are relevant attempts to support these points. However, some claims are not fully explained: the test result is presented without showing how it demonstrates the effects of studying independently, and the Spelling Bee example is not clearly connected to managing studies. Develop these examples and explain more directly how teacher guidance helps learners plan, check progress, and resolve difficulties. This would make the response more fully supported and balanced in its development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. The paragraphs generally have identifiable central ideas, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help show relationships between points. However, connections are sometimes mechanical or unclear. For instance, the move from grammar difficulties to the Spelling Bee example does not establish a strong logical link, and repeated references to students lacking knowledge make the progression feel circular. Some references, such as “they” in the first body paragraph, could be clearer about which learners are meant. Organise each paragraph around one distinct reason, then explain and illustrate it before moving on; this would make the argument progress more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to education and language learning, including “formal course,” “complex grammatical rules,” “mastery in vocabulary,” and “learning process.” These choices communicate the topic, but the range is limited by repeated use of “students,” “knowledge,” “complex,” and “without assistance.” Several word-choice and collocation errors also make parts less natural, such as “gain the actual theories,” “depth knowledge,” and “scores 30% in a general test.” Spelling errors including “self-stidy,” “garammars,” and “themse lve” (intended as “themselves”) further affect accuracy. Build a wider set of precise expressions for guidance, progress, and understanding, and check spelling and common word partnerships during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “as,” and “which.” This allows you to explain causes and consequences, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, some sentence structures and grammatical forms are inaccurate. For example, “Numerous learner want” has a number-agreement error, while “there are no tutor” and “students … scores” also show agreement problems. Articles and sentence construction need attention in phrases such as “as a optional subject” and “Without attending in a formal course.” Some long sentences combine several ideas without clear punctuation, particularly the sentence beginning “Furthermore, to understand…”. Practise accurate agreement, articles, and clause boundaries, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each has a clear structure.
