Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the task but lacks a clear overview, which is essential for Band 6 and above. The data is presented in a mechanical, list-like fashion, focusing on individual data points rather than identifying significant trends or making meaningful comparisons. For instance, the report describes each category separately without contrasting the significant gap between perceived and actual crime rates across all types. The interpretation of the data as 'imaginary' is inaccurate; the graph shows a discrepancy between perception and reality, not a measure of imagination. To improve, you should group information logically and provide a summary of the main trends, such as the consistently higher perception of danger compared to actual likelihood.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is repetitive. Each paragraph follows an identical, rigid structure, which makes the writing feel mechanical. Cohesive devices are limited and often misused; for example, 'Same in Burglary crime' is not a standard way to transition between points. Referencing is also weak, as the text relies heavily on repeating the same sentence patterns rather than using pronouns or synonyms to link ideas. To improve, vary your sentence starters and use a wider range of linking words like 'conversely', 'in contrast', or 'furthermore' to create a smoother flow between your observations.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on the words provided in the prompt. Phrases like 'crimes is perceived' and 'crimes are reported' are used repeatedly, which restricts the range of expression. There are also issues with word choice, such as using 'illustrations of the people' to describe the gap between perception and reality, which is not accurate in this context. To achieve a higher band, you should use a broader range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'discrepancy', 'overestimated', 'significant margin', or 'fluctuated', and avoid repeating the same phrases throughout the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses simple sentence structures almost exclusively. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., '15% of the crimes is perceived') and article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of complex sentence structures and the persistent errors in basic grammar limit the score. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and try to incorporate complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to combine your observations more effectively.
