IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The graph gives information on perceived danger and actually being a victim to three crimes (burglary, car crime, and violent crime) in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. Units are measured in percentages.
Overall, car crime is the crime that people are most wary of but the actual occurrences of the crime are way lower than expected in both time periods. Car crime had the most occurrences overall while burglary had the least actual occurrences in both time periods.
In 2009/2010, burglary was expected to happen about 15% of the time but only occurred about 2% of the time. The expectations decreased in the following time period to land at approximately 13% of the time while actual reported burglaries recorded a small climb to around 2.5%. At the start of the period, car crime was expected to happen about 21% of the time which was the most overall, but only occurred about 4.5% of the time. The perceived occurrences decreased to around 17% in 2010 while actual crimes recorded also experienced a small decline to about 4% of the time.
Violent crime was expected to happen about 15% of the time in 2009/2010 but actual recorded violent crimes were at 3% of the time. The expectations decreased to approximately 14% of the time while occurrences registered a small increase to approximately 3.5% of the time in 2010/2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two time periods. You successfully highlighted the discrepancy between perceived danger and actual likelihood for all three crime types. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly compare the categories more directly (e.g., noting that the gap between perception and reality is widest for car crime) rather than just listing the data for each crime type sequentially. Overall, the information is accurate and well-selected.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group the data effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In 2009/2010', 'while', and 'at the start of the period' are used appropriately to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from general trends to specific data points. The use of referencing is generally good, though some transitions between sentences could be slightly more varied to improve the flow further.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'wary of', 'actual occurrences', and 'recorded a small climb' are used effectively. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the reliance on 'occurred' and 'time period'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic synonyms to describe trends and data. For instance, instead of 'recorded a small climb', you could use 'exhibited a marginal increase'. The current range is adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are some minor issues with phrasing, such as 'actually being a victim to three crimes' (should be 'victim of') and 'land at approximately 13% of the time' (a bit informal). While you have a good grasp of grammar, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. Incorporating more varied subordinate clauses or passive constructions would enhance the grammatical complexity of your writing.
