Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart compares the likleihood of being a victim of crime perceived vs actual victim of crime form 2009 to 2011.It is showing information in crimes like burglary , car crime and violent crime.

Overall the percentage of perceived or actual likelihood of being a victim of crime is lower or at-most equal in any year as in case of burglary or violent crime but higher in case of car crime.

Looking first at car crime the percentage of being perceived is 21 and actual was 4 in 2009 to 2010. It was 17 and 4 in 2010 to 2011.Turning to the burglary it was a little more then 15 percent of being perceived compared to the a little less than 3 percent of actual being a victim from 2009 to 2010.Looking clearly the percentage of being perceived was reduced in 2010 to 2011 but the actual victim rate was increased.

Similarly we can see alike trend in the violent crime the percentage was 15 and little more then 3 in 2009 to 2010 then percentage of being perceived reduced to 13 and being actual victim remained same

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the three crime types and the two time periods. However, the overview is somewhat confusingly phrased, stating that the perceived likelihood is 'lower or at-most equal' to the actual likelihood, which contradicts the data where perceived danger is consistently higher than actual likelihood across all categories. While the key features are identified, the lack of precision in describing the trends and the inaccurate summary of the relationship between the two variables limit the score. To improve, ensure that the overview accurately reflects the main trend shown in the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as 'Looking first at' and 'Turning to the'. There are also issues with referencing; for instance, the transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, making the flow feel disjointed. The progression of ideas is present but could be smoother with more varied linking words and better control over paragraph structure to ensure each point leads logically to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several spelling errors, such as 'likleihood' and 'form' instead of 'from'. The phrasing is often repetitive, relying on simple structures like 'percentage of being perceived'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more varied and precise terminology, such as 'the proportion of individuals who perceived a risk' or 'the actual incidence rate', and ensure greater accuracy in spelling and word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'It is showing information in crimes like burglary', 'a little more then 15 percent', and 'alike trend in the violent crime'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would be beneficial.
