Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph compares the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime for the years 2009 and 2010. The crimes are burglary, car crime, and violent crime.

Overall, the perceived danger of being a victim of crime was significantly higher in every crime type for both years. While the percentages for an actual victim to perceived risk ratio had a substantial difference as being an actual victim had a much lower percentage compared to perceiving to be one.

21% of people perceived being a victim of car crimes in 2009 compared to the 16% in 2010. Similarly in 2009 more people perceived of being a victim of burglary and violent crimes than in 2010 by approximately 2.5%.

The percentage of being involved in an actual crime was almost equal for both years being slightly less than 5% for car crimes, 2.5% for violent crimes and burglary.

In conclusion, the percentage for perceived danger of being a victim of crime was higher in 2009, whereas the percentage for actually being a victim was less than perceiving of being one, however, the percentage of actually being in a crime stayed even throughout different crimes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph well, identifying the key trend that perceived danger consistently outweighs actual likelihood. You have successfully selected and reported data for all three crime types across both years. However, the analysis could be improved by providing more precise comparisons between the crime types themselves, rather than just comparing the years. For instance, noting that car crime has the highest perceived danger while violent crime and burglary show different patterns in actual likelihood would add depth. The overview is clear and effectively highlights the main trend, meeting the requirements for a Band 7 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the data, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall,' 'Similarly,' and 'In conclusion,' to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt, and some sentences could be better connected to improve the flow. The use of referencing is generally clear, but some cohesive links are a bit mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'perceived danger,' 'actual likelihood,' and 'victim of crime' are used accurately. However, there is some repetition of basic structures and vocabulary, such as 'percentage of being' and 'perceived of being.' To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms or more sophisticated collocations related to data description, such as 'the disparity between,' 'a notable discrepancy,' or 'the figures remained relatively stable.' The current range is adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'perceived of being a victim' (should be 'perceived being a victim') and 'stayed even throughout different crimes' (should be 'remained consistent across different crime types'). There are also some issues with preposition usage and phrasing. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on refining your use of prepositions and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision.
