The bar chart compares the percentage of people who feared becoming victims of three types of crime (burglary, car crime, and violent crime) with the actual percentage of those who fell victim to them in two periods: 2009/10 and 2010/11.

Overall, it is clear that public anxiety regarding crime was consistently and significantly higher than the actual statistical probability of being targeted. While both perceived and actual risks experienced minor shifts over the two periods, car crime remained both the most feared and the most common threat.

Looking at the perceived risk, car crime caused the greatest concern, with 21% of people expecting to be victims in 2009/10, which later fell to roughly 17% in 2010/11. Burglary and violent crime followed a similar downward trend; fear of burglary dropped from 15% to approximately 13%, while anxiety over violent crime decreased from around 16% to about 13% over the same period.
