Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph demonstrates the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.
Through the graphical representation, Burglary and violent crime seems to level out whereas car crime has highest noticeable record.
Burglary and violent crime were perceived around 15% in 2009/10 but the actual were below 5%. Furthermore, Burglary and violent crime declines considerably achieving approximately 13% perceived in 2010/11. Additionally, the actual likelihood of being a victim of crime incline slightly around a percent in both burglary and violent crime.
However, car crime perceived in 2009/10 was the most throughout the period which alter significantly in 2010/11 reaching below 15%. Moreover, the actual violent crime halt within 3% during the period of time.
Through the tabular graph, we can observe that car crime perceived was comparatively higher than other crimes recorded between 2009 to 2011. But the actual likelihood of being a victim were massively lower than perceived.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the graph, but it fails to provide a clear overview or accurately report the data. The description of the trends is often confusing, such as stating that burglary and violent crime 'level out' when the data shows fluctuations. Furthermore, the report lacks precision; for instance, the claim that car crime was 'the most throughout the period' is vague, and the comparison between perceived and actual likelihood is not clearly articulated. The data points mentioned are sometimes inaccurate or difficult to follow, which prevents a full understanding of the information presented in the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as the transition 'Through the tabular graph' (the source is a chart, not a table) and the repetitive use of 'Moreover' and 'Additionally'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the different crime types and the two years provided. While there is an attempt to group information, the lack of clear signposting and the disjointed nature of the sentences hinder the overall flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'highest', 'considerably', and 'lower'. There are instances of inaccurate word choice, such as 'incline' used as a noun instead of 'increase' or 'rise', and 'halt' used incorrectly to describe a static figure. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, you should focus on using more varied verbs and nouns to describe trends, such as 'fluctuate', 'remain stable', or 'a significant discrepancy'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the actual were below 5%' and 'car crime perceived was comparatively higher'. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'car crime perceived in 2009/10 was the most throughout the period which alter significantly'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the overall control of grammar is inconsistent, which limits the ability to communicate the data points accurately and professionally.
