Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given column graph shows the estimated and actual percentages of being a victim of three serious crimes: burglary, car crime, violent crime in the year 2009-10 and 2010-11. At a glance, the perceived dangers' percentages are always higher than the actual ones.

To begin with, car crime was the highest feared in the year 2009-10 with percentages just below a quarter. While the actual car crimes were 4%. Furthermore, in the year 2010-11, the perceived car-crimes decreased moderately to 17%. While the real car crime remained the same as of previous year. On the other hand, the estimated values of burglary and violent crime were similar for both the years. Burglary was estimated at 16% and violent being just below it at 15% in 2009-10. Moreover, in 2010-11, the perceived values declined to around 13% for both. Actual reporting of burglary and violent crimes was very less and remained the same in both the years.

Overall, people feared for crimes and over-estimated them than the actual values.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview and identifies the main trends, such as the consistent gap between perceived and actual crime rates. You have selected key features, including the high perception of car crime and the stability of burglary and violent crime figures. However, the analysis could be improved by providing more precise data points; for instance, describing figures as 'just below a quarter' is vague. Additionally, the comparison between the two years is slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are explicitly linked to the data provided in the graph, avoiding generalizations like 'very less' which lack statistical precision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. The reference to 'the previous year' is clear, but some transitions feel slightly repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus to enhance the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'estimated', 'perceived', and 'moderately'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'actual reporting of burglary... was very less', which is grammatically and lexically awkward. 'Very less' is not standard English; 'significantly lower' would be more appropriate. You also repeat 'percentages' and 'values' frequently. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptors for trends and statistical comparisons would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the perceived dangers' percentages are always higher' (incorrect possessive usage) and 'remained the same as of previous year' (missing article). Additionally, the sentence fragment 'While the actual car crimes were 4%' is a common error; this should be joined to the preceding sentence. Improving your control over articles and sentence boundaries will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
