Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph illustrates the actual and perceived of being a victim of crime by three different crime types, in 2009 and 2010.

Overall, perceived danger is mostly high in percentage in 2009, with car crime taking the lead. While actual likelihood of being a victim was almost the same in both years.

In 2009, the victim of perceived danger in car crime was about 22%, while in violent crime it was accounted about 15%, and just over 15% was seen in burglary. Similar pattern was shown in 2010, with around 17% of victims in car crime, approximately 13% in burglary, and about 13% in violent crime.

In terms of actual likelihood of being a victim of crime, in 2009, it was accounted for about 4% in car crime, and about 2% in burglary, around 3% in violent crime. In 2010, these numbers recorder about 4%, 3%, and just over 2%, respectively

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons between perceived and actual crime rates. The overview is clear, and the data is accurately selected to support the main points. However, the analysis could be improved by more explicitly highlighting the significant gap between the perceived danger and the actual likelihood of crime, which is the most striking feature of the graph. The information is presented logically, but the development of the comparison between the two years could be more nuanced to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for the two categories. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In terms of' and 'In 2009', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing, such as 'the victim of perceived danger', is slightly awkward and impacts the overall cohesion of the sentence structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the data points clearly. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'the victim of perceived danger' and 'these numbers recorder about'. These errors do not impede communication but indicate a limited range of vocabulary. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and avoid repetitive structures when reporting data. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'actual and perceived of being a victim' (missing noun) and 'it was accounted about 15%' (incorrect passive construction). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and tense issues, such as 'these numbers recorder' instead of 'recorded'. These errors occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band, although they do not significantly impede the reader's understanding of the data.
