The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart shows how likely people thought they were to become victims of crime versus how likely it actually was , for three types of crime in 2009/10 and 2010/11.

Overall, the perceived risk of being a victim was far higher than the actual likelihood for all three crimes in both years . Additionally , car crime was perceived as the greatest danger, while burglary had the highest perceived risk in 2009/10 dropped in 2010/11.

In 2009/10, around 16% of people believed they would be burglary , which fell to about 13% in 2010/11 . In contrast , the actual likelihood remained low at roughly 2-3% in both years . for car crime , the perceived risk was highest , at approximately 21% in 2009/10 and 17%in 2010/11 , whereas the actual figures were only about 4-5%. Similarly, for violent crime , around 15% perceived a risk in both years , but the actual likelihood was just 2-3%.

In conclusion , people consistently overestimated their chances of being victims of crime . The gap between perception and reality was largest for car crime
