The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart compares the perceived and actual likelihood of becoming a victim of three types of crime—burglary, car crime and violent crime—in 2009/10 and 2010/11.

Overall, the perceived likelihood of becoming a victim was considerably higher than the actual likelihood for all three types of crime in both periods. Car crime had the highest perceived figure, whereas burglary generally had the lowest actual figure.

In 2009/10, car crime had the highest perceived likelihood, at approximately 21%, followed by violent crime and burglary, at around 16% and 15%, respectively. However, the actual figures were much lower. Car crime stood at about 5%, while violent crime and burglary were recorded at approximately 3% and 2%, respectively.

In 2010/11, the perceived likelihood of car crime fell to around 17%, while the figures for burglary and violent crime were approximately 13% and 14%, respectively. In terms of actual likelihood, car crime remained at about 5%, whereas burglary increased slightly to 3% and violent crime rose to approximately 4%.
