Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph compares the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.
Overall, the perceived risk of crime was generally higher than the actual likelihood of becoming a victim. Car crime represented the highest figures, whereas burglary recorded the lowest proportions. In addition, violent crime recorded a relatively steady figure.
Regarding the perceived risk of crime, car crime recorded the highest figure in 2009, reaching just over 20%, while the other crime categories remained below this level. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which severely impacts the ability to fully address the task. While the introduction and overview are present, the body paragraph is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence. Consequently, the report fails to cover all parts of the task, as the data is not fully described or compared. To improve, you must ensure you provide a complete analysis of all data points presented in the graph and meet the minimum word count to allow for a thorough summary of the main features and relevant comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response shows a basic attempt at logical organization with an introduction, an overview, and the start of a body paragraph. However, because the text is incomplete, the overall progression is interrupted. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding' and 'while' are used, but the abrupt ending prevents a coherent conclusion or a fully developed argument. To achieve a higher band, ensure your response is complete and that you use a wider range of cohesive devices to link your ideas more fluidly throughout the entire report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with terms like 'perceived risk', 'actual likelihood', and 'proportions' being appropriate for an academic report. However, the range is limited, and the repetition of 'recorded' and 'figure' suggests a restricted vocabulary. To improve, you should aim to use a more varied range of synonyms and precise reporting verbs to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'dipped', or 'remained constant', rather than relying on the same basic structures throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The grammar is generally accurate in the sentences provided, with a mix of simple and complex structures. There are no major errors that impede communication, but the range of structures is limited. The incomplete nature of the final sentence makes it impossible to judge the accuracy of more complex grammatical forms. To improve, focus on incorporating a wider variety of sentence structures, such as passive voice or relative clauses, and ensure that all sentences are completed to demonstrate full control over your writing.
