Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, including the contrast between perceived and actual crime rates. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identified the categories, the comparisons between the two years are occasionally inaccurate or confusingly phrased, such as stating that actual rates for 2009/10 and 2010/11 were 'at same number of 4.5%' for car crime, when the graph shows slight variations. Furthermore, the conclusion repeats information already stated rather than providing a synthesis of the data. To improve, ensure you accurately report the specific figures and focus on the most significant trends rather than listing every data point.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally misused. For example, 'In addition to this' and 'Furthermore' are used, but the logical flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed. The referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the comparison between burglary and violent crime is vague. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus will help improve the flow and logical progression of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'the number of... was...' and 'perceived/actual'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'in both term of' (should be 'in terms of') and 'at the top as compare to' (should be 'compared to'). To achieve a higher score, try to vary your vocabulary by using synonyms for 'number' (e.g., 'figure', 'proportion', 'rate') and more sophisticated ways to describe trends, such as 'remained stable', 'witnessed a decline', or 'exceeded'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('actual likelihood stay low', 'car crime stay at the top') and missing articles or incorrect prepositions ('in both term of'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often repetitive. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your sentences are grammatically complete. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, would also be beneficial.
