Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph illustrates the perceived and actual possibility of being a victim of burglary, car or violent crime in percentage between 2009 to 2010 and 2010 to 2011.

Overall, it is evident that possibility of being a sufferer has always been high in both the given periods, whereas people who faced the accident in reality was comparatively less.

In 2009/10, the percentage of perceived car crimes were at the peak that accounted for just above 20. However, burglary and violent crimes reported for equivalent percentage which was approximately 15. In 2010/11,the trend was similar to previous year with higher rate of car crimes, although the percentage was comparatively lower, around 17. Moreover, theft and heinous crimes were just above 13%.

Furthermore, offence that was on top when considered to happen in reality as well as only imagined was car related (around 4%) , followed by violent crime and burglary.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the perceived and actual likelihood of crime. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you correctly identify that perceived danger is higher than actual likelihood, the data reporting is inconsistent. For instance, you mention 'theft and heinous crimes' in the second paragraph, but these categories are not explicitly labelled as such in the provided graph, which only lists burglary, car crime, and violent crime. Additionally, the comparison between the two years is brief and lacks detail regarding the specific trends for each crime type. To improve, ensure you accurately label data points and provide a more comprehensive comparison of the figures across both periods.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally mechanical. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is clear, but the internal structure of the second body paragraph is slightly disjointed, particularly when discussing the actual likelihood of crime. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'perceived', and 'accounted for'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'sufferer' to describe a victim of crime and 'accident' to describe a criminal act, which are not contextually appropriate. The phrase 'heinous crimes' is also not supported by the provided graph labels. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to statistics and crime reporting, and ensure that your vocabulary choices are strictly aligned with the information provided in the prompt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'percentage of perceived car crimes were at the peak' (should be 'was') and 'reported for equivalent percentage' (should be 'reported an equivalent percentage'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are minor spacing issues after commas. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles when discussing statistical data.
