Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar chat illustrates the information about perceived hazard and actual happened of being a victim of crime like Burglary, car crime, violent crime during 2009 to 2011. The data is calibrated in percentage.

On scrutinizing the graph, it is lucid that Burglary had perceived danger near about 15% in [redacted phone]. Whereas in [redacted phone] it was declined and settled around 13%. However, actual crime was fluctuated approximately 2% only in these periods.

On further analysis, car crime and violent crime has also estimated danger are more than 15% and 10% respectively. Almost 4% car crime was held from 2009 to 2011. Moreover, in actual violent crime had less than 5% in given data. Assumptions were 3 time more than actual happened from 2009 to 2011.

From an overall analysis, it is clearly seen that actual crime had happened less than it was predicted in all of given types of crimes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the key trends and making comparisons between perceived and actual crime. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention that 'assumptions were 3 time more than actual happened', the data presentation is occasionally imprecise (e.g., 'near about 15%'). To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited more accurately and that the comparison between the categories is more clearly structured. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to highlight the significant gap between perception and reality across all crime types.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On scrutinizing', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. The referencing is generally clear, but the progression of ideas within the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are several awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'actual happened' instead of 'actual incidence' and 'bar chat' instead of 'bar chart'. You rely on basic descriptors like 'declined' and 'fluctuated', which are correct but limited. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'discrepancy', 'overestimated', or 'marginal', and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'car crime and violent crime has also estimated danger are' is syntactically confusing. There are also issues with article usage ('the' is often missing) and verb tense consistency. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically sound.
