IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The graph compares people's perceptions of the risk of becoming victims of three types of crime with the actual likelihood of victimisation in 2009/10 and 2010/11.
Overall, the perceived risk of crime was substantially higher than the actual likelihood in both years and across all crime categories. Car crime had the highest perceived figures, while the actual proportions were comparatively low. In addition, the figures changed only slightly between the two years.
Regarding burglary, the perceived risk was just over 15% in 2009/10, before falling to approximately 13% in 2010/11. By contrast, the actual likelihood was much lower, at around 2% and 3%, respectively.
A similar pattern can be seen in car crime. The perceived figure was slightly above 20% in 2009/10, which was the highest figure on the chart, before declining to about 17% in the following year. Meanwhile, the actual proportion remained at approximately 4% in both years.
Finally, for the third category, the perceived risk stood at around 15% in 2009/10 and decreased slightly to 14% in 2010/11. However, the actual likelihood was considerably lower, at only about 3% in each year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the graph and provided a clear comparison between perceived and actual crime rates. You highlighted the key trend—that perceived risk is consistently higher than actual likelihood—and supported this with accurate data points from the chart. The overview is concise and effectively sets the stage for the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, you could further synthesize the data by explicitly contrasting the magnitude of the gap between the two metrics across the different crime types, rather than just listing the figures for each category sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs for each crime category. You use cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'In addition' effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. The information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, and the referencing between the two years is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely. Phrases like 'substantially higher', 'comparatively low', and 'actual likelihood of victimisation' show good control. You avoid repetition by using synonyms such as 'figures', 'proportions', and 'rates'. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for an academic report, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terms (e.g., 'discrepancy' or 'statistical evidence') would elevate the lexical range further toward the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'which was the highest figure on the chart', and maintain consistent tense usage throughout. Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which demonstrates a high level of control. To improve, you could experiment with more varied sentence beginnings or more complex grammatical structures to demonstrate greater flexibility.
