IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illustrates the comparison of potential dangers with the actual criminal cases in proportion, diversified into 3 main problems: burglary, car crime and violent crime during two selected time frames, October 2009 and November 2010.
Overall, the projected data in 2009 was witnessed to dominate the static in 2010 while there was no dramatical difference between those years in the actual percentage among there distinct crimes.
Initially, the common feature in all three categories was that the predicted figures were always higher than those in reality. The largest data was observed in the car crime section, with its projected percentage reaching approximately 20% in 2009 and around 17% in 2010. Although the perceived proportion in 2009 was 3% higher than that in 2010, the real figure demonstrates nearly similar results, around 4% each year, which were 5 times lower in 2009 and 4 times lower in 2010.
Secondly, both burglary and violent crime received the same proportion in their prediction, at around 15% (2009) and 13% (2010), then significantly dropped to the range of 3% to 4% in reality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the graph, noting the consistent trend that perceived danger exceeds actual likelihood across all categories. You also made relevant comparisons between the years and crime types. However, the report could be improved by providing a more precise overview of the data. For instance, while you mention that projected data was higher in 2009, you could have more clearly highlighted that car crime consistently showed the highest perceived danger. Additionally, the description of the data for burglary and violent crime is slightly vague; specifying the exact figures or the degree of the gap between perception and reality would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Although', and 'Secondly' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'the largest data was observed' is slightly awkward; 'the highest figures were recorded' would be more natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis, which helps the overall flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'proportion', and 'significantly'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'the projected data... was witnessed to dominate the static' is unnatural; 'projected figures were higher than the actual statistics' would be more precise. Additionally, 'dramatical difference' is incorrect; the correct adjective is 'dramatic'. Expanding your range to include more precise reporting verbs and nouns related to statistical trends would help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'Although' clauses. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'there distinct crimes' (should be 'these') and 'the real figure demonstrates nearly similar results' (should be 'similar results'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of determiners. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the sentence structures are varied enough to convey the information clearly.
