Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart compares the perceived and actual likelihood of becoming a victim of three types of crime—burglary, car crime and violent crime—in 2009/10 and 2010/11.

Overall, it is clear that people consistently overestimated their chances of becoming victims of crime. Car crime had the highest perceived likelihood in both years, while the actual figures were considerably lower for all three types of crimes.

In 2009/10, approximately 15% of people believed they were likely to experience burglary, compared with only about 2% who actually became victims. Similarly, around 21% perceived car crime as a likely risk, whereas the actual figure was just under 5%. For violent crime, the perceived likelihood was approximately 16%, while the actual percentage was around 3.5%.

In conclusion in 2010/11, the perceived likelihood of burglary fell slightly to about 13%, although the actual figure increased to nearly 3%. The percentage who believed they might experience car crime also decreased, from around 21% to 17%, while the actual figure remained close to 5%. Finally, the perceived risk of violent crime declined to approximately 14%, but the actual figure rose slightly to about 4%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected and reported key features from the graph. By comparing the perceived and actual likelihoods for all three crime types across both years, you have provided a comprehensive summary. The data is accurately represented, and the comparisons are relevant and well-supported by the figures provided. The structure is logical, moving from a general overview to specific data points, which demonstrates a clear understanding of the requirements for an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis. Cohesive devices such as 'similarly', 'whereas', and 'although' are used appropriately to link ideas and contrast the perceived versus actual figures. The flow of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. There is a minor punctuation error in the final paragraph ('In conclusion in 2010/11'), but this does not significantly detract from the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Phrases like 'consistently overestimated', 'perceived likelihood', and 'actual figures' are used correctly in context. The vocabulary is precise enough to describe the trends, such as 'fell slightly' and 'remained close to'. While the range is adequate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to data description could elevate the score further. Overall, the lexical control is good, and there are no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'In 2009/10, approximately 15% of people believed they were likely to experience burglary, compared with only about 2% who actually became victims.' The majority of your sentences are error-free. There is a minor punctuation slip in the final paragraph regarding the introductory phrase, but this is a minor error that does not affect the clarity of your writing. Your control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the report.
