Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The graph illustrates the perceived danger and actual likelihood of becoming a victim of three types of crime. Burglary, car crime and violent crime in 2009/10 and 2010/11.
Overall, perceived crime was much higher than the actual crime in all the types of crime. Car crime accounted for the highest proportion, whereas burglary and violent crime showed similar results. Moreover, perceived crime rates were declined in 2010/11 as compared to 2009/10.
In 2009/10, perceived car crime recorded the highest figure at 21% while the actual crime was at 4%. A similar pattern was observed for burglary and violent crime, with 15% of perceived crime whereas the actual crime was comparatively low at 2% for burglary and 3% for violent crime.
By 2010/11, the rate of perceived crime declined for all the crimes. Perceived car crime dropped to 17%, while burglary and violent crime rates declined to 13% and 14% respectively. Furthermore, the actual crime rates were relatively similar to 2009/10, 4% for car crime, 2% for burglary and 3% for violent crime.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the comparison between perceived and actual crime and the trends over the two-year period. The overview is clear and highlights the main trend that perceived danger consistently outweighs actual likelihood. However, the report could be improved by more precise data integration; for instance, the grouping of burglary and violent crime as having 'similar results' is slightly vague given the specific percentages provided. Overall, the response effectively summarizes the data and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two time periods. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'whereas', 'moreover', and 'by 2010/11' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas throughout the text. The referencing is generally clear, and the flow between sentences is smooth, contributing to a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'recorded', 'observed', and 'respectively' correctly. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks a wider range of less common lexical items that would elevate the score to a higher band. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the terminology related to the graph is used appropriately throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'perceived crime rates were declined' (should be 'declined' or 'were declining') and 'in all the types of crime' (should be 'for all types of crime'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The control of grammar is sufficient to ensure that the reader is not distracted by the errors.
