IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph illustrates the percentages of people who fear that they will become a victim and those who actual became victims of crimes, shown through three different crimes (burglary, car crime, and violent crime). It was recorded during two periods, 2009/10 and 2010/11.
Overall, in 2009/10, the pecentages of those who were perceived were significantly higher than the actual victims. The same pattern was shown in 2010/11. It was clear in both periods that car crimes were the highest in percentage whereas, burglary and violent crime were both lower.
In 2009/10, the percentage of those who were scared of being a victim of car crimes was the most dominant at approximately 20%. But the figure for the actual victims were a bit over 15%. For bulgary, the likelihood of victims were also lower than percieved risks at around 13% compared to 15%. The same goes for the proportion of violent crimes.
While in 2010/11, the figures were much lower. The supposed risk and the actual risk for car crimes were equal in percentage, accounting for 4%. Regarding bulgary and violent crimes, the subjective risk and objective risk were all under 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features and provided relevant comparisons between the perceived and actual crime rates. You covered both years and all three crime categories. However, the analysis of the 2010/11 data is slightly inaccurate; the graph shows that for car crime, the perceived risk is actually higher than the actual risk, whereas you stated they were equal. Additionally, the description of the 2009/10 data could be more precise by explicitly mentioning the specific percentages for each category to better support your comparisons. Overall, you have provided a clear overview, but more attention to detail in data interpretation would improve the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two time periods. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'In 2009/10,' and 'While in 2010/11' to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the phrase 'The same goes for the proportion of violent crimes' is a bit vague. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1 response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'perceived,' 'actual victims,' 'proportion,' and 'subjective risk.' There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'pecentages' and 'bulgary' (repeatedly). You also struggle slightly with word choice, such as 'the percentages of those who were perceived,' which is imprecise; it should be 'the percentages of those who perceived a risk.' While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, you need to refine your spelling and collocation to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'those who actual became victims' should be 'actually became,' and 'the figure for the actual victims were' should be 'was' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, 'the percentages of those who were perceived' is grammatically awkward. Despite these errors, your meaning is generally clear, and the errors do not significantly impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of adverbs versus adjectives.
