Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph presented shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.

The graph shows three main types of crimes such as car crime, violent crime and burglary studied along two years between perceived and actual crimes.

Overall, the graph shows an increased perceived crimes and the actual crimes under five percent for all three main types. In 2009/10 the perceived crimes are increased compared to perceived crimes made in 2010/11 for all types.

The burglary crime rate show a small increase around one percent in 2010/11. Otherwise, the car crime tend to be smaller than one percent in 2010/11 than 2009/10, but the violent crimes remain the same in both period of time.

The biggest change between both perceived crimes is the car crime, which is smaller with around three percent in 2010/11 than the other value measured in 2009/10.

In conclusion, the major changes are made in perceived crimes rather in the actual crimes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response identifies the main features of the graph, such as the disparity between perceived and actual crime rates. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks precision in reporting the data. For instance, the statement that 'actual crimes are under five percent' is a good summary, but the description of the trends is confusing. The comparison between 2009/10 and 2010/11 is attempted, but the phrasing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the specific changes in the data. To improve, you should focus on grouping the data more logically and ensuring that the figures cited are clearly linked to the specific crime types.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the transition 'Otherwise, the car crime tend to be...' does not logically connect to the previous sentence. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'the biggest change between both perceived crimes is the car crime'. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow and logical progression of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use the word 'crimes' and 'perceived', which limits the range of your writing. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'perceived crimes are increased' (should be 'perceived crime rates increased') and 'the major changes are made in perceived crimes rather in the actual crimes' (should be 'rather than'). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider variety of synonyms and more precise academic collocations to describe trends and data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('car crime tend to be'), incorrect preposition usage ('in both period of time'), and awkward phrasing ('the major changes are made in perceived crimes'). While the meaning is generally understandable, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage would be highly beneficial.
