The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart compares the percentage of people who believed they would be victims of crime with the actual percentage who were victims, for three types of crime in 2009/10 and 2010/11.

Overall, the perceived likelihood of being a victim was consistently much higher than the actual likelihood for all three crime types in both years. Furthermore, while perceived figures fell between 2009/10 and 2010/11, actual figures remained relatively stable.

In 2009/10, car crime was perceived as greatest threat, at about 24%. This was followed by burglary at 15% and violent crime at about 14%. However, the actual likelihood was far lower: approximately 4% for car crime, 2% for burglary and 2% for violent crime.

By 2010/11, public perception decreased for all categories. Perceived risk for car crime dropped to 16%, burglary to 13% and violent crime to 12%. In contrast, actual rates showed only slight changes, remaining below 4% for all three crime.

In conclusion, the data reveals a clear gap between public fear and reality, with people greatly overestimating their risk of becoming crime victims.
