Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart illustrates the perceived and actual likelihood of becoming a victim of three categories of crime—burglary, car crime, and violent crime—over two periods: 2009/10 and 2010/11.

Overall, public perception of the risk of experiencing crime was significantly higher than the actual recorded crime rates across all categories and timeframes. Additionally, while the perceived risk of all crimes dropped from 2009/10 to 2010/11, the actual victimisation rates experienced slight increases.

In terms of specific crimes, car crime was perceived as the greatest threat. In 2009/10, the perceived risk for car crime peaked at over 20%, before declining to around 17% in 2010/11. However, the actual recorded figures remained much lower, sitting under 5% in both years.

Burglary and violent crime followed similar patterns. The public perception of being burgled was approximately 15% in 2009/10 and dropped to roughly 13% the following year. In reality, the actual rate of burglary hovered around a mere 2% to 3%. Similarly, fear of violent crime was relatively high, starting at about 15% and dropping slightly to nearly 13% in 2010/11, whereas the actual rate stayed consistently low, below 4% for both periods.
