Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph illustrates the perceived danger and possibility of being a victim of crime in actuality.
Overall, the percentages of both the car crime danger and being its victim are the highest among all. Although, the proportions of perceived danger reduced in 2010/11, the actual likelihood of being victim of a crime remained almost the same in all crime types.
The percentage of of perceived danger in car crime was around 21% in 2009/10 and it reduced to almost 17% in 2010/11.However, the actual percentages remained same in both years which were slightly less than 5 percent.
On the other hand, burglary and violent crime were seen with the same figures in all the cases. The perceived danger was 15 percent in both in 2009/10 until it decreased to approximately 18 percent in 2010/11 in both type of crimes. The actual crime percentages increased slightly over the year and ended up to almost 3 percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student covers the main features of the graph, attempting to compare perceived danger and actual likelihood across car crime, burglary, and violent crime. However, there are significant data interpretation errors and contradictions in the reporting. For instance, the text states that perceived danger in burglary and violent crime 'decreased to approximately 18 percent in 2010/11', whereas standard graphs of this data typically show drops or different figures, and the student's own previous sentence mentions 15 percent, making the progression confusing ('until it decreased to approximately 18 percent'). Furthermore, key overview trends are partially stated, but the underdeveloped details and inaccuracies place this response at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response has an overall structure including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, which provides some organization. However, progression is hindered by confusing transitions and logical flaws, such as starting a sentence with 'Although' without a proper balancing clause or logical contrast in 'Although, the proportions of perceived danger reduced...'. Cohesive devices are sometimes used inaccurately or mechanically, as seen with 'On the other hand' when introducing burglary and violent crime, where the comparison is not entirely clear. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences lack smooth inter-sentential links. This aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic reporting, employing terms such as 'illustrates', 'percentages', 'proportions', and 'actual likelihood'. However, there are notable word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'possibility of being a victim of crime in actuality' and 'percentages of both the car crime danger and being its victim'. Spelling and collocation errors also appear, including 'percentages remained same' (missing article) and repeated prepositional errors like 'percentage of of perceived danger'. The lexical range is limited and repetitive, justifying a Band 5.0 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses (e.g., 'The percentage of perceived danger in car crime was around 21% in 2009/10 and it reduced to almost 17% in 2010/11'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors including missing articles ('remained same'), punctuation issues (unspaced or misplaced commas), and faulty complex structures that cause confusion (e.g., 'The perceived danger was 15 percent in both in 2009/10 until it decreased...'). These errors frequently hinder clarity, pointing clearly to a Band 5.0.
