Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar graph compares the various type of crime that a human can perceived or be an actual victim of it. It shows the overall percentages of crime that has been occurred or perceived between the year 2009 to 2011.
Firstly, we can see that there is a considerable amount of people in 2009/2010 were aware of different types of crime as compared to the latter period. The crime rate for the cars were at peak during the year 2009 whereas the actual crime were lesser as compared to the assumption. Furthermore, the percentage of car crime perceived in 2010/2011 are also higher though, the actual crime rate is similar with the previous years.
Subsequently, the crime rate for bulgary and violence remained the same for the year 2009/2010 even though the actual crime is very few in percentage in contrast to 2010/2011 where the actual rate for this crimes is slightly higher than the previous years. However, all the perceived crime rate for 2010/2011 are much less in percentage as compared to 2009/2010.
To conclude, we got to know that many people are aware of all the types of crimes but only a few fall victims of the actual crimes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The candidate attempts to summarise the graph comparing the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime. While the main features are touched upon, such as the comparison between perceived and actual crime rates for different categories, the response suffers from a lack of precise data referencing. For instance, specific categories like car crime, burglary, and violence are mentioned, but exact figures or proper time-period breakdowns (2009/10 and 2010/11) are somewhat confused and generalised. The overview provided in the conclusion is brief and lacks precision. However, the core message of the graph is grasped, placing this response at Band 5.5 for partially addressing the task requirements with some limited and under-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into four paragraphs, following a standard essay structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'Subsequently', 'However', 'To conclude'), although some are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'we got to know'. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical progression within the body paragraphs is occasionally muddled by confusing time frames and vague referencing. For example, phrases like 'the actual crime is very few in percentage' disrupt the smooth flow of information. Overall, the arrangement provides a basic coherent structure, earning a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is adequate for the task, attempting vocabulary relevant to crime statistics such as 'percentage', 'crime rate', 'perceived', and 'victim'. However, there are notable limitations and awkward word choices throughout the text, including 'various type of crime' (instead of types), 'a human can perceived', 'actual crime were lesser', and 'fall victims of the actual crimes'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but word formation and collocation errors (e.g., 'bulgary' for burglary) are apparent and occasionally impede smooth reading. This vocabulary profile aligns best with Band 5.0, reflecting a limited but minimally adequate range with noticeable errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, though attempts at complex sentences frequently contain grammatical errors. Examples of inaccurate structures and tense agreement issues include: 'that a human can perceived or be an actual victim of it', 'crime that has been occurred', 'a considerable amount of people in 2009/2010 were aware', and 'the actual rate for this crimes is'. Punctuation is generally functional, but frequent grammatical inaccuracies in verb forms, prepositions, and singular/plural agreement cause difficulty for the reader at times. This performance warrants a Band 5.0 for a limited range of structures and frequent errors.
