The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

This bar chart compares people's precieve risk of becoming a victim of three types of crime burglary, car crime and violent crime with the actual incidence of these crimes in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

Overall, the perceived likelihood of being a victim was significantly higher than the actual likelihood forall crime types in both years. While perceived risk fell slightly between the two years, the actual crime rate remained relatively stable and very low.

Car crime was perceived to be the biggest threat. In 2009-10. about 21% of individuals thought they would be a victim, compared to an actual rate of only around 4%. By 2010-11 perceived risk for car crime had dropped to about 17%, while the actual rate stayed at 4%.

For burglary, around 15% of respondents felt at risk in 2009-10, but the actual rate was only about 2%. The following year, both perceived risk13% and actual 2.5% showed a similar pattern.

Violent crime followed the same trend. About 15% of people perceived themselves to be at risk in 2009-10 versus an actual rate of 3% and this perceived fear fell to 13% in 2010-11, while the actual rate remained changed at under 3%.
