Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given graph describes the comparison of the percentage of perceived and actual crimes from 2009 to 2011. The perceived crimes are far more than actual crimes as shown. Here three different crimes given the Bulgary, car crime and violent crime. In between 2009 and 2010 the percentage of preceived crimes of bulgary and violent crime is similar, just over 15%. Also after that in 2010 and 2011 both were fall down to, around 13%. Whereas actual crimes of both these were at different level, the bulgary lies at 2 and a half percent in 2009/10 which than increases a little bit, on the other hand actual violent crimes remain same from 2009 to 2011 which is at almost 3 percent. Car crimes are more than both of these having percentage of above 20 in preceived crimes in 2009/10 which decreases to below 20 in 2010/11. The actual car crimes were also high from bulgary and violent , almost 5% in 2009/10 is than decreased just a little bit in 2010/11.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the chart, including comparisons between perceived and actual crimes and across the three categories (burglary, car crime, and violent crime). An overview is provided at the beginning, noting that perceived crimes are far more numerous than actual ones. However, the data reporting contains some minor inaccuracies or vague approximations, such as misinterpreting the actual trend for burglary, which actually rose slightly from 2% to 2.5%, whereas the student states it increased 'a little bit' after starting at 2.5% (it started at 2%). Furthermore, the text lacks paragraphing, presenting all information in one dense block, which hinders clear task organization. Nevertheless, key data points are adequately selected and compared, supporting a Band 5.5 score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is presented as a single paragraph, lacking proper structural division between the introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively (e.g., 'Here three different crimes given', 'Also after that', 'Whereas actual crimes of both these were at different level'). Although there is a basic logical flow moving from an overview to specific crime types, the absence of paragraphing and the mechanical use of transition phrases restrict overall coherence. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'both of these', which makes tracking the intended referents harder for the reader. This performance aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic summary of the chart, but it is repetitive and contains several spelling and word choice errors (e.g., 'Bulgary' instead of burglary, 'preceived' instead of perceived, 'fall down' instead of fell, 'high from' instead of higher than). The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'percentage', 'decreases', and 'comparison', but control is weak. There are frequent lexical slips that reflect a limited range and make communication slightly clumsy in places, though meaning is still generally retrievable. This fits the criteria for Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Here three different crimes given', 'the bulgary lies... which than increases'), incorrect prepositions ('at different level'), and tense inconsistencies ('was fall down', 'is than decreased'). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences joined by commas rather than proper conjunctions or full stops. Because errors are frequent and cause some difficulty for the reader, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
