Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0

The candidate has completely misunderstood the visual prompt. The stimulus is a bar chart concerning the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime by crime type in 2009/10 and 2010/11. However, the student wrote about pie charts showing housing tenure in the UK in 1991 and 2007. This represents a completely off-topic response. Furthermore, the length requirement of at least 150 words is not met, as the response contains only 149 words. Because the writing addresses a completely different task, Task Achievement cannot exceed Band 3.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The text is divided into short paragraphs, but the overall organisation is severely compromised by the off-topic content. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, such as 'In 1991', 'The social renting are', and 'Overall'. Referencing is frequently unclear, and the paragraphing does not follow a logical progression relevant to the actual task data. However, looking strictly at structural attempts, sentences are separated into paragraphs, which prevents a score of 3.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

Vocabulary is basic and repetitive, featuring frequent word-choice and spelling errors (e.g. 'catageries', 'ranting', 'catagories'). The student struggles with basic collocations and terminology related to charts and statistics. The limited vocabulary is heavily influenced by the memorisation or hallucination of a completely different writing prompt, meaning appropriate vocabulary for the actual task is entirely absent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The student displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple and flawed sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors that impede communication, such as 'there was have 22 million homes', 'The home owner was 60 percent', and 'is increase and decrease'. Verb tense usage is erratic, switching inappropriately between past and present time frames ('rise to the 27 million', 'it is increase'). Control over basic syntax is weak.
