Overall, a striking discrepancy exists across all categories: the perceived danger of crime was dramatically higher than the actual likelihood of becoming a victim. Additionally, while the perceived threat of crime saw a noticeable decline across all types over the two-year period, the actual crime rates experienced a marginal increase.Looking closely at the specifics, car crime was consistently viewed as the most significant threat. In 2009/10, the perceived danger for car crime peaked at just over 21%, before dropping to around 17.5% in 2010/11. Despite this intense public anxiety, the actual occurrence of car crime was vastly lower, hovering at just 2% in the first year and rising slightly to nearly 5% in the second year.A similar pattern is evident in the remaining categories. Public concern regarding burglary started at approximately 15% in 2009/10, falling to roughly 13% the following year. However, the real threat remained exceptionally low, shifting slightly from roughly 2% to 2.5%. Violent crime followed an identical path; public worry dropped from about 15% to 13.5%, whereas the actual rate of victimization crept up minutely from about 3% to 3.5% over the same timeframe.
