Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by identifying general trends and categories, noting that car crimes had the highest perceived danger while burglary accounted for lower actual victimization. However, the response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum requirement, containing only 128 words. Furthermore, there are several inaccurate data statements; for instance, claiming that the proportion of actual likelihood was highest in the years 2009-2010 across all types combined or misrepresenting specific percentages and timelines. The lack of adequate word count and the presence of data misinterpretations prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into four brief paragraphs, starting with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. However, overall progression is limited by the brevity of the text and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes awkward, such as 'While the burglary and violent crimes made up only 15% in the same timeline. It slightly declined...' where reference and linkage between sentences are weak. Paragraphing is attempted, but the logical flow between ideas is frequently disrupted by imprecise referencing and abrupt shifts in data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'perceived danger', 'likelihood', 'proportion', and specific crime types like 'burglary', 'car crimes', and 'violent crimes'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'percieved' (misspelled multiple times), and awkward collocations like 'actually' placed at the end of the introductory sentence. The lexical range is limited and repetitive, preventing the student from accessing higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While the burglary and violent crimes made up only 15% in the same timeline.' However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are errors with verb tenses and agreement, such as 'the car crimes had the highest proportion of percieved danger whereas the burglary accounted for lowest proportion'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors in grammar and article usage reduce the proportion of error-free sentences.
