IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph give us data about observed danger or being actual victim of crime by cime type in a specific time period (2009/10 and 2010/11) which are evaluated in percentage.

Overall, the percieved crime rate has alway been on the top while the actual rate of crime is relatively low in these years. The car crimes has the highest ration between the three types while burglary and voilent crime follows.

Firstly, the car crimes with the highest rate of percieved crimes in both time periods one over 20% while other around 17%. The actual crimes are below 5% in both periods almost 4% in both years.

The burglary and voilent crime are probably the same ratio of crimes. The percieved amount of crimes in burglary and voilent crimes are on the same level of just little above 15% in both years while the ratio of voilent crimes differ the burglary by a very little margin in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the graph comparing perceived and actual crime likelihoods across three crime types. An overview is provided, noting that perceived crime is always higher than actual crime and that car crime is the highest. However, there are notable omissions and inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the perceived amount for burglary and violent crime are on the same level of just little above 15% in both years, whereas the chart shows burglary at 15.5% and 13%, and violent crime at 15.5% and 13.5% (close, but statements regarding ratios and exact comparisons lack precision). Furthermore, the expression of data points is vague, such as 'one over 20% while other around 17%'. Overall, the response covers the main trends but lacks accurate data reporting and thorough development, placing it in Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs, attempting a logical progression. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Linking phrases like 'Firstly' introduce paragraphs, but internal cohesion within sentences is weak due to grammatical issues and confusing referencing. For example, 'The burglary and voilent crime are probably the same ratio of crimes' lacks clear logical connection to the preceding sentence. Paragraphing is attempted, but the overall progression is disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence structures. The mechanical use of referencing places this criterion firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary adequate for basic communication regarding statistical graphs, using words such as 'graph', 'percentage', 'rate', and 'type'. However, there are numerous spelling errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, including 'give' instead of 'gives', 'observed' instead of 'perceived', 'cime' instead of 'crime', 'percieved' instead of 'perceived', 'alway' instead of 'always', 'ration' instead of 'ratio', and 'voilent' instead of 'violent'. These lexical inaccuracies and persistent spelling mistakes restrict the score to Band 5.0, as they occasionally impede the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is quite low. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'The graph give us data', 'the percieved crime rate has alway been on the top', and 'The car crimes has the highest ration'. Prepositional errors are also present, such as 'danger or being actual victim' instead of 'danger of being an actual victim'. Complex structures are frequently faulty. Because errors are frequent and cause difficulty for the reader, this performance aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.
