Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph comparing perceived and actual crime likelihood. However, there are several data inaccuracies; for instance, the student states that 'almost 22% of cases viewed in 2009/10' for car crime, whereas the chart shows approximately 21%, and states 'in burglary almost 15% crime were perceived' when the figure is actually 15.5%. Furthermore, the response is severely under-length at only 124 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum requirement. The conclusion is also incomplete, breaking off abruptly at 'in conclusion'. Due to the incomplete length, inaccurate data transcription, and underdeveloped overview, the task achievement is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organized into separate paragraphs for each crime type, which provides a basic structure. However, the overarching progression is hindered by the abrupt and unfinished conclusion ('in conclusion'). Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'where as' and repetitive clause structures ('in burglary almost...', 'in violent crime...'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the lack of a proper concluding summary and mechanical referencing affect the overall flow and coherence of the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'crime', 'perceived', and 'actual'. There are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'illustraits' (illustrates), 'viewed danger' (perceived danger), and awkward phrasings like 'existing a victim' (being a victim) and 'cases viewed' or 'cases perceived'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, the frequent errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing restrict the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, but grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition use, such as 'the car crime ratio were more than' (was more than) and 'in burglary almost 15% crime were perceived' (crimes were perceived). Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, notably starting sentences with lowercase letters ('overall, it is clear...' and 'in conclusion'). Complex structures frequently contain errors that cause some difficulty for the reader.
