Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting the main features such as the peak in car crime and the vast discrepancy between perceived danger and actual likelihood. Key figures are accurately reported overall, such as car crime being perceived around 20-21 percent in 2009/10 and dropping by about 5 percent in 2010/11. The comparison between the two years and across the three crime categories is clearly made. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise slightly on minor fluctuations, and punctuation issues like missing capital letters at the start of sentences slightly detract from formal presentation, though the core content meets Band 7 requirements well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised logically into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs dedicated to each year. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'overall', 'in year 2009/10', 'meanwhile', and 'in the same period of time'. However, paragraphing and sentence-level mechanics show faults, specifically the lack of capital letters at the beginning of sentences and a few awkward transitional links. Despite these mechanical errors, there is a clear logical progression throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the data trends easily, which aligns with Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'perceived danger', 'actual likelihood', 'discrepancy', and various crime types like 'burglary' and 'violent crime'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some awkward phrasing occurs, such as 'biggest fear of single most crime' and 'actual crime across the types reamained almost same'. Spelling is generally accurate with minor slips like 'reamained'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands, fitting solidly into Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and comparative structures. However, grammatical accuracy is limited by frequent basic errors, most notably the complete absence of capitalisation at the start of sentences and proper nouns, as well as missing articles ('the graph illustrates percentage where people believed', 'compared to last year it decreased'). There are also occasional prepositional inaccuracies ('actual crime across the types'). While these errors rarely completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the text from achieving a Band 6.5 or higher.
