The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the subjective risk and crime victimization risk by burglary, car crime and violent crime.

Overall, the highest perceived risk was for car crime. At the same time, car crime showed the highest risk of actual crime in all years. In contrast, the likelihood of violent crime remained at the lowest in all years. Crucially, the perceived risk for all crimes was significantly higher than the actual likelihood of occurrence.

In 2009/10 the subjective risk of car crime rose to just above 20%, followed closely in 2010/11 when ir reached 17%. In contrast, the risk of actual car crime in both 2009/10 and 2020/11 stood at just below 5%.

The perceived crime rate for burglary was 15.3% in 2009/10, but it experienced a downfall in 2010/1, reaching 13%. Meanwhile, In 2009/10 the actual crime rate wase was extremely low at 2%, experienced a slight rise to 3% by 2010/11.

Violent crime figures showed a similar pattern, starting at 15.1% for the perceived risk and afterwards dropping to 13.5% in 2010/11. On the other hand, the actual crime rate was only 3% in 2009/10 and rose slightly to 3.5% in 2010/11.
