The bar chart compares the perceived danger and actual likelihood of becoming a victim of three types of crime—burglary, car crime, and violent crime—in 2009/10 and 2010/11.

Overall, it is clear that people greatly overestimated their chances of becoming victims of crime. Car crime was considered the most likely type of crime in both years, while the actual figures were considerably lower for all three categories. In addition, perceived risks generally decreased in 2010/11.

In 2009/10, approximately 15% of people believed they could become victims of burglary, whereas the actual figure was only about 2%. The perceived likelihood of car crime was the highest, at around 21%, compared with an actual rate of roughly 3%. For violent crime, about 14% of people perceived a risk, while the actual likelihood was less than 1%.

In 2010/11, the perceived likelihood of all three crimes fell. Around 13% of people thought they might experience burglary, while the actual figure remained at about 2%. Similarly, the perceived risk of car crime declined to approximately 16%, compared with an actual rate of around 2.5%. Finally, about 12% perceived a risk of violent crime, while the actual figure was only around 0.5%.
