Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph provides information about the percentile of crime that people believe takes place and how much the actual crime rate is between the time period 2009 and 2011, with details about the crime type.
Overall, it is observed that people perceive there are high chances of being a victim of crime throughout the time span of 2009 and 2011, whereas the actual likelihood is far less. The data is collected for car crimes, violent crimes and burglary crimes. The actual crime rate is not more than 5%.
The highest perceived crime percentile is of car crimes, from the year [redacted phone]. The lowest perceived crime is almost similar for burglary and violent crimes, with more than 15% and between 10% -15 % respectively, throughout the time span of 2 year each. The actual crime committed by criminals is the highest for car crimes and the least for burglary crimes.
In conclusion, the percentage of actual crime that victims face are comparatively lesser than the perceived crime rate across all three types.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses the main features of the prompt by comparing the perceived and actual likelihood of crime across three categories (burglary, car crime, and violent crime) for the years 2009/10 and 2010/11. An overview is provided, noting that perceived danger significantly exceeds actual likelihood. Key comparisons are highlighted, such as car crimes having the highest perceived and actual rates. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings regarding the data points, such as referring to 'percentile of crime' instead of 'percentage' or 'proportion', and describing the lowest perceived crime as 'between 10% -15%', which lacks precision. Despite these minor limitations, all parts of the task are adequately covered, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, providing a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the main body details, and the concluding summary. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'whereas', and 'In conclusion', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition into body paragraph three ('The highest perceived crime percentile is...') abruptly shifts focus without smooth signposting from the previous paragraph. Nevertheless, the logical structure remains coherent throughout, supporting an easy read and justifying a Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using terms like 'perceived danger', 'actual likelihood', 'victim of crime', and 'proportion'. However, there are several instances of inappropriate word choice or unidiomatic phrasing, most notably using 'percentile' instead of 'percentage' ('percentile of crime', 'perceived crime percentile'), which indicates a lack of precision with statistical terms. Other minor awkward expressions appear, such as 'burglary crimes' instead of simply 'burglary'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main message, these lexical slips and the lack of more sophisticated uncommon items prevent the response from reaching a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and comparative structures (e.g., 'The bar graph provides information about... and how much the actual crime rate is...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present. For instance, 'the percentage of actual crime that victims face are comparatively lesser' contains an agreement error ('are' instead of 'is') and a non-standard comparative form ('lesser' instead of 'lower'). Additionally, the phrase 'throughout the time span of 2 year each' is grammatically incorrect. While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency across the short text means that error-free sentences are not in the majority, making Band 6.0 the appropriate score.
