Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph depicts the perceived threat and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.
Overall, it is clear that, the ratio of perceived crimes remained high as compared to, the actual crime.
However, the figure of actual crime remained fluctuated or stay moderate; in addition, the highest ratio of crimes were recorded in car crime.
From 2009 to 2010, the share of perceived crime remained elevated in all categories of crimes, such as burglary crime, car crime, and violent crime. In burglary crime the ratio of victims is just over 15%, as compared to actual victims which is approximately 2.5%. However these figures must be elevated in car crime, where the ratio of perceived crime is about 21%, while the actual crime ratio is just under 5%.
Between 2010 and 2011, the share of perceived crime is also high. Meanwhile, the ratio of actual crime in all categories also witnessed a slight increase. Additionally, the lowest figures of actual and perceived crimes are recorded in burglary crime approximately 13% and 2.5% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and comparing the perceived danger against the actual likelihood of being a victim of crime across three categories and two time periods. However, some areas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies. For instance, the overview mentions that 'the figure of actual crime remained fluctuated or stay moderate', which lacks precision, and the specific data points in the body paragraphs occasionally mix up years and percentages, such as stating 'From 2009 to 2010... the ratio of victims is just over 15%'. While the main features are highlighted, the lack of full clarity and minor data misinterpretations prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and is divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the data. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Additionally', to connect ideas. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly awkward, as seen in phrasing like 'Meanwhile, the ratio of actual crime in all categories also witnessed a slight increase.' Furthermore, some punctuation errors interrupt the smooth flow of the text, such as unnecessary commas in sentences like 'it is clear that, the ratio of perceived crimes remained high as compared to, the actual crime.' These issues place the response firmly in the middle band for this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'perceived threat', 'elevated', and 'ratio'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the text. For example, the student uses 'burglary crime' instead of simply 'burglary', and writes that figures 'must be elevated in car crime' where 'are higher' or 'peak' would be more appropriate. Additionally, phrases like 'the figure of actual crime remained fluctuated or stay moderate' display awkward phrasing and tense inconsistency. These vocabulary and spelling errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the score to the current level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions. However, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation that surface throughout the text. These include subject-verb agreement and tense issues, such as 'the ratio of crimes were recorded' and 'stay moderate', as well as awkward prepositional use and intrusive commas. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the grammar score from advancing. To improve, the writer should focus on maintaining consistent past tenses when describing historical chart data and ensuring complex sentences are grammatically sound.
