Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph depicts the perceived threat and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.

Overall, it is clear that, the ratio of perceived crimes remained high as compared to, the actual crime.

However, the figure of actual crime remained fluctuating and stayed moderate; in addition, the highest ratio of crimes was recorded in car crime.

From 2009 to 2010, the share of perceived crime remained elevated in all categories of crimes, such as burglary crime, car crime, and violent crime. In burglary crime the ratio of victims is just over 15%, as compared to the actual victims which was approximately 2.5%. However these figures must be elevated in car crime, where the ratio of perceived crime is about 21%, while the actual crime ratio is just under 5%.

Between 2010 and 2011, the share of perceived crime is also high. Meanwhile, the ratio of actual crime in all categories also witnessed a slight increase. Additionally, the lowest figures of actual and perceived crimes were recorded in burglary crime approximately 13% and 2.5% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, providing an overview and selecting key features to report and compare. The main trends are identified, such as the overall gap between perceived and actual crime. However, some areas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the writer states that from 2009 to 2010 the ratio of victims in burglary was just over 15%, whereas the chart shows this was the perceived figure, conflating perception with actual victimization in the phrasing. Similarly, stating that car crime had the highest ratio of crimes is acceptable as an overview, but the body paragraphs could have integrated the 2010-11 figures more thoroughly. Overall, the task is relevantly addressed, fulfilling the requirements for a satisfactory overview, though greater precision in distinguishing perceived versus actual data points is needed to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, and body details. Information and ideas are generally logically sequenced, beginning with a broad summary and moving into specific years. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For example, transitional phrases like 'However these figures must be elevated' are awkward and imprecise in their logical connection. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as when 'these figures' is used loosely. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within the paragraphs lacks smoothness. To progress further, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that transitions between sentences build a more seamless progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate main points about crime statistics reasonably well. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and appropriate topic-specific terms such as 'perceived threat', 'actual likelihood', and 'categories of crimes'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'the figure of actual crime remained fluctuating' where 'fluctuated' would be more natural, and 'burglary crime' instead of simply 'burglary'. Word formation and collocation issues also appear, such as 'ratio of perceived crimes remained high'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to a moderate band. Incorporating more precise academic collocations and natural phrasing would elevate this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as subordinate clauses ('while the actual crime ratio is just under 5%'). However, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Unnecessary commas disrupt sentence flow, as seen in 'it is clear that, the ratio... compared to, the actual crime.' There are also issues with verb tense consistency and preposition use, such as 'in burglary crime the ratio of victims is just over 15%'. While these errors rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band. A greater variety of error-free complex sentences and tighter control over punctuation and grammatical patterns are required for improvement.
