Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response makes an attempt to address the prompt by mentioning some crime types and percentages, but the data reported contains several inaccuracies and misinterpretations. For instance, the student states that the perceived burglary rate for 2010/11 is 3%, whereas the chart shows it was approximately 13%, and misreports several other figures. Furthermore, the description of the visual features is confused, identifying the bar chart as a 'histogram' and incorrectly describing the legend patterns. While some main features are touched upon, the response only minimally and tangentially engages with the actual data presented, leading to an underdeveloped overview of the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The writing suffers from a lack of clear overall progression and logical organisation. The text is presented as a single block rather than being properly paragraphed into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inappropriately, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences like 'The type of graph is histogram. the crime reached its highest in 2009-10.' Referencing and linking of ideas are weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow a coherent line of thought when comparing the perceived and actual likelihoods across the different years and crime categories.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with several noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes that occasionally strain the reader's comprehension. Examples of errors include 'crim' instead of crime, 'Car time' instead of car crime, and 'Violet crime' instead of violent crime. The student attempts to describe the data using a limited range of terms, but inaccurate word choices, such as calling the chart a histogram and describing the shaded patterns as 'upward lines from write to left', highlight a restricted lexical control that is only minimally adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures and repetitive frames to report figures. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. For example, 'The x-axis represent' lacks agreement (should be 'represents'), and there are issues with articles and missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences, as seen in 'the crime reached its highest'. Attempts at more complex structures are largely absent or faulty, and frequent mechanical errors cause some difficulty for the reader throughout the response.
