Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the task by reporting the key figures for perceived and actual crime rates across the two years and three crime types. However, some aspects of the information are under-developed or inaccurately generalized. For instance, the writer states that the actual percentage for violent crime is 'equal in both years which is 4% approximately', whereas the data shows it was 3% in 2009/10 and 3.5% in 2010/11. The overview is also somewhat simplistic, stating that 'there is so much difference in perceived and actual crime report', which lacks precision and fails to highlight the most salient overall trends effectively. To reach a higher band, the response would need to select and compare key features more accurately and provide a fully developed overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs for specific crime types, and an overview. Cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Furthurmore', and 'Overall' are used to signal the progression of ideas, which helps the reader follow the text. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive. For example, moving between the years and crime types sometimes feels abrupt. To achieve a higher band, the logical relationships between sentences and paragraphs would need to be smoother and more sophisticated, ensuring the information flows seamlessly without relying on basic transitional markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic comparisons using terms like 'percentage', 'perceived', 'actual', and 'likelihood'. However, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'vry' (very), 'Furthurmore' (Furthermore), and 'Actula' (Actual). The writer also tends to repeat words like 'percentage', 'years', and 'approximately' rather than using synonyms or varying sentence structures. To improve to a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items with greater precision and eliminate spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'It shows the perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime for both years.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including missing articles ('percentage of victim of crime' instead of 'percentage of victims of crime') and issues with subject-verb agreement or prepositions. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the score at this level. To attain a higher band, the student must demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures and improve grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding articles, plurals, and prepositional usage.
