Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 91 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While the student attempts to outline some main features of the chart, such as mentioning car crime being higher and noting burglary and violent crime, the information is very limited and contains inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the text claims that perceived violent crime was higher than 15%, whereas the chart shows figures around 13-13.5%. The overview is weak and lacks a clear summary of the overall trends shown in the visual data. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is fully met and provide a more accurate, complete overview of all key data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization attempted with transitional phrases like 'Overall' and 'Turning to the last figure', but the progression of ideas is disjointed and lacks clarity. Paragraphing is disjointed and sentences are often awkwardly linked, leading to a mechanical feel. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons between perceived and actual crime figures. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing throughout the text, use cohesive devices more accurately, and structure the essay into clear, coherent paragraphs with distinct topic sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and limited in range. There are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'types crime of past and present living', 'car crime preceived higher', and 'actual smallest'. Spelling and word formation errors also occur, which cause some difficulty for the reader in understanding the precise meaning. To achieve a higher band, the student should expand their vocabulary range by incorporating more precise and less common lexical items related to data reporting and statistics, while ensuring correct word formation and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures with frequent structural errors. Attempts at complex sentences or clauses are consistently faulty, as seen in phrases like 'violent as perceived highest than 15% by comparing actual less 2%'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, articles, prepositions, and comparative structures that cause difficulty for the reader and distort meaning at times. To progress, the student must work on foundational sentence construction, proper use of verb tenses, and accurate comparative structures.
