Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a limited and confused interpretation of the visual data. The student struggles to accurately report the figures, misinterpreting percentages such as claiming actual car crime was around 45% (when it was around 4.5%). While an overall trend is attempted, it is awkwardly expressed and mathematically incorrect in places. The key features of the chart—such as the clear contrast between high perceived danger and low actual likelihood across all three crime types—are not fully or clearly highlighted, leaving the reporting underdeveloped and mechanically executed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs for the categories, and an overall statement, but the progression of ideas lacks clarity. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as repetitive transitions ('As for', 'In contrast', 'Furthermore') and incorrect referencing. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within sentences is frequently disrupted by poor phrasing, causing the reader to pause and piece together the intended meaning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout, such as 'detected and the original victim', 'upper trend' instead of 'upward trend', and 'most percentages' instead of 'highest percentage'. Spelling and word formation errors, alongside imprecise reporting of data, cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'the percentages of perceived in 2009/10 was given a upper trend' and 'Actual 2009/10 and 2010/11 was the lowest position'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after periods and comma splices, resulting in sentences that require effort to decode.
