Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph provides a comparative analysis of perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime, namely burglary, car crime, and violent crime, between 2009 and 2011.

Overall, the data highlights that perceived danger experienced an upward trend throughout the entire period, whereas actual likelihood recorded the lowest figure.

Perceived danger from 2009 to 2011, perceived car crime rate reached a peak before declining to 17 percent. Conversely, burglary and violent crime rate accounted for an identical proportion in 2009, after which these figures registered a slight drop to 13 percent each.

Turning to the actual likelihood between 2009 and 2011, the percentage of car crime emerged as the largest figure in both years, at 4 percent; however, the proportion of burglary crime made up the lowest rate, at 3 percent in 2009, compared with just 3.5% in 2011. By contrast, the rate of violent crime remained consistent in both years, at 3.5 percent each.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features and making relevant comparisons between perceived and actual likelihood of crime. However, the word count requirement is not met, as the response contains 147 words, falling just short of the 150-word minimum (with 11 words copied from the prompt excluded). While an overview is attempted, it contains factual inaccuracies, such as stating that perceived danger experienced an upward trend when the data actually shows a decrease from 2009/10 to 2010/11. Some details regarding the data points are also confused or slightly misreported, placing the response at this band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical structure divided into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for perceived danger and actual likelihood. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Conversely', and 'Turning to' are used to guide the reader through the data, although referencing and mechanical transitions are occasionally a bit rigid. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of data, demonstrating clear progression despite some minor flaws in overall cohesion and referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'comparative analysis', 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'crime rate'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some inaccuracies in word choice and expression occur, such as referring to 'burglary crime' instead of simply 'burglary'. Spelling and word choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication, allowing the response to comfortably meet the requirements for this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases effectively. There are some errors in grammar, such as agreement issues ('perceived car crime rate reached a peak' followed by plural references or tense shifts), but these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. Punctuation is generally controlled well, and the sentence structures show a reasonable degree of variety appropriate for this level.
