Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the main features of the chart, providing a general overview and citing several specific data points regarding perceived and actual crime. However, the task achievement is only partial because there are notable inaccuracies in reading the data, such as stating that actual victims of car crime in 2009/10 reached 17% and confusing the categories for 2010/11. The selection of data is somewhat disorganized, and certain comparisons lack clarity or precision. To reach a higher level, the response would need to accurately report the figures directly from the chart and provide a more fully developed, coherent summary of the main trends without misinterpreting the specific data categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some organisation with a clear introduction and conclusion, and attempts to group data by year and crime type. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by mechanical or inaccurate use of cohesive devices, such as repetitive transitions like 'On the other hand' and 'Similarly'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structuring of paragraphs lacks cohesion, leading to a disjointed reading experience. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that ideas are sequenced logically with a smoother flow of information, using referencing words accurately to guide the reader through the data comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, with repeated use of basic terms such as 'recorded', 'figures', and 'percentages'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'percieved' instead of 'perceived', 'deiiferent' instead of 'different', and 'buglary' instead of 'burglary'. These lexical errors and awkward phrasing sometimes cause difficulty or require the reader to slow down. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range by incorporating more precise vocabulary related to data reporting and avoid frequent spelling mistakes by carefully checking their work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic subject-verb constructions with frequent attempts at complex sentences that are often faulty. There are recurrent grammatical errors, including prepositions and awkward clause structures, such as 'whileViolent crime was recorded for 15.75%' and missing articles or incorrect agreements. These frequent errors persist throughout the text and can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer should practice constructing error-free complex sentences and pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation.
