Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart gives information about the percieved and actual percentage of people being victims of three types of crimes in 2009/10 and 2010/11. The crime types are burglary, car crime, and violent crime.

Overall, it is clear that perceived danger was always higher than actual crime in all years. Car crime was the highest perceived crime among all categories.

Looking at percieved crime, car crime was the highest in 2009/10 with around 21%. In 2010/11 it went down to about 17%. For burglary, percieved risk was about 15% in 009/10 and it decreased to around 13% in 2010/11. Violent crime perception was 15% in 2009/10 and dropped slighly to 13%.

Regarding actual crime rates, they were very low for all crimes. Actual burgary was about 2% in 2009/10 and 3% in 2010/11. For car crime, actual percentage was around 5% in both years. Lastly, actual violent crime was about 3% in 2009/10 and increased slightly to 4% in 2010/11.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main trends and making relevant comparisons between perceived danger and actual crime rates. The key features of the data are reported accurately, noting that perceived risk consistently outweighed actual likelihood and highlighting car crime as the highest perceived category. While the main points are adequately covered, some of the specific figures and comparisons could have been extended further to fully develop the analysis. The overview is clear and the selection of data points is appropriate, reflecting the requirements of a solid performance in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information and ideas are arranged with a clear overall progression. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for perceived and actual crime rates. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking at', 'Regarding', and 'Lastly' are used to structure the text, although referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical. The logical flow from the general comparison to specific crime categories works well, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of the data without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the statistical information about crime rates. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors, such as 'percieved' (spelled incorrectly multiple times) and 'burgary' instead of 'burglary'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'proportion', 'category', and 'perception', but the range remains somewhat limited and repetitive. The spelling slips and occasional reliance on basic phrasing prevent the lexical score from reaching a higher band, though the meaning is always clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'The bar chart gives information about...' and 'In 2010/11 it went down to...'. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('was highest perceived crime') and minor prepositional inaccuracies ('in 009/10'), but these errors do not impede communication. Complex sentences are generally controlled, and punctuation is handled adequately throughout the text, showing a comfortable command of basic and moderately complex grammatical structures.
