Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar graph compares the probability of being a perceived and actual victim of crime between the time periods 2009-10 and 2010-11 based on the type of crime(Burglary, Car crime or violent crime).

Overall, the car crime reported the highest probability of being a victim of crime over both the periods while individuals considered as perceived victims are significantly higher than actual victims among the three crimes. However, the probability of being a perceived victim of crime decreased over the years.

With regard to car crime, it showed the dominant proportion of crime victims compared to the other crimes. The probability of

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at 102 words in the middle of a sentence. Furthermore, the task is only partially addressed. While the introduction attempts to outline the scope of the chart, and the overview correctly identifies the stark contrast between perceived and actual crime likelihoods, the body paragraph cuts off before adequately reporting and comparing the specific data for all three crime types across both years. To reach higher bands, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is fully met and provide a complete, well-supported comparison of all main features in the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates some logical organization, beginning with a clear introductory sentence and moving into an overall summary that captures the main trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall' and 'With regard to' are used to structure the ideas. However, the overall progression is incomplete because the text cuts off prematurely in the second body paragraph, leaving the description unfinished. Paragraphing is attempted, but the abrupt ending prevents the full development of a cohesive structure. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that paragraphs are carried through to a logical conclusion and that ideas are fully fleshed out with appropriate transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with appropriate topic-specific terms such as 'probability', 'perceived victim', 'actual victim', and 'burglary'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and lexical phrases like 'dominant proportion' and 'significantly higher'. However, there are some awkward collocations, such as 'the car crime reported the highest probability', where 'car crime' cannot 'report' a probability. Word-choice errors of this nature reflect an adequate rather than fully precise range. To achieve a higher band, the writer should focus on natural phrasing and accurate collocations related to statistical data representation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the introductory relative-style modification and comparative structures like 'individuals considered as perceived victims are significantly higher than actual victims'. There are some grammatical errors, such as the missing article in 'over both the periods' and the slightly awkward phrasing in 'over the years' when describing only a two-year span (2009-10 and 2010-11). Nonetheless, these errors are relatively minor and do not impede overall communication. To improve further, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures and ensure strict accuracy in prepositions and determiners.
