Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to summarise the main features of the chart comparing perceived danger and actual likelihood of crime, the information presented contains noticeable inaccuracies and confusion regarding the data values and years. For example, the student writes that 'car crime in the year 2010 it rised upto 22% but in 2010 it fall down into 16%', which misinterprets the figures shown in the graph. The overview is overly simplistic, and the overall selection and reporting of data lack clarity and precision. To move up, the writer needs to accurately report the figures from the visual data without confusing the years or percentages, and provide a clearer, more accurate summary of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation with the use of introductory and sequencing markers such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', and 'Secndly', but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas within paragraphs is confused, mixing different years and crime types together. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as abrupt transitions between sentences. To improve, the writer should ensure that each paragraph focuses on a logical grouping of data—such as separating the overview, the perceived data comparisons, and the actual crime data—and use referencing terms more smoothly to guide the reader through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'victime' instead of victims, 'occured' instead of occurred, 'diffrent' instead of different, and 'Secndly' instead of secondly. Collocations are also weak, as seen in phrases like 'top percentage' instead of the highest percentage. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the topic, but frequent inaccuracies mean the range remains restricted. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, improve word choice and spelling accuracy, and use precise terms to describe statistical changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic past or present tense forms. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, featuring frequent grammatical errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the violent and burglary has silimar 15%'), incorrect prepositions, and structural awkwardness like 'the actual crime 3% and 4% respectivally' missing necessary verbs. Punctuation and spelling errors are also present throughout the text. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of accurate complex sentence structures, ensure correct verb forms and tense consistency, and eliminate basic grammatical errors that disrupt the flow of reading.
