Student answer (Band 4.5)
The bar chart Illustrates the pre assumed and actual dangers likelihood of being a victim of crime.
The perceived numbers of Burglary in 2009/10 was 15. Whereas Actual crime was its one fifth with almost 3 crime activities. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify all three crime types and make relevant comparisons between perceived and actual figures, including the much lower actual rates and the decline in perceived burglary and car crime. However, several figures or comparisons are inaccurate: burglary’s actual rate is about 2% in 2009/10, not almost 3%, and its 2010/11 rate is about 2.5%, not unchanged from the previous year. The chart also shows perceived car crime falling from about 21% to 17%, a trend that is not clearly stated. There is no concise overview of the main pattern, and the response sometimes describes percentages as numbers of crimes or victims. A clear overview and more accurate reporting of the key figures are needed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response follows a broadly sensible order, moving from burglary to car crime and then violent crime, and it uses time markers such as “In 2010/11” to signal comparisons. However, the information is presented in one long block without a distinct overview or clear paragraphing, so the main trends are difficult to identify. Connections between ideas are sometimes unclear: “However the Actual number of same crime was Its one forth” does not make the comparison easy to follow, and “after checking it” introduces an unexplained shift. Repeated use of “However” also makes linking mechanical. Grouping the overview separately and comparing perceived with actual figures consistently for each crime would improve progression and clarity.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “perceived,” “actual,” “reported,” and “victims,” and attempt to express comparisons through phrases such as “one fifth” and “one forth.” However, vocabulary is often imprecise or repetitive, which strains understanding. “Pre assumed” is not a natural description of perceived likelihood, while “crime activities” and “real data” do not accurately name the chart’s percentages or actual likelihood. “One forth” is also an incorrect form, and “reported more than 20 crimes” confuses a percentage with a count. Use precise terms such as “percentage,” “likelihood,” and “rate,” and choose comparison phrases that clearly identify which figure is being compared.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the response generally communicates the three crime categories and two time periods. However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between figures unclear. For example, “The perceived numbers of Burglary in 2009/10 was 15” has a plural subject with a singular verb, and “In 2010/11 Burglary perceived was report was less” contains an unclear, faulty verb structure. Articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “Whereas Actual crime was its one fifth.” Capitalisation within sentences is irregular, and punctuation does not reliably separate complete ideas. Practise accurate comparative sentence patterns, such as “The perceived rate fell from … to …, while the actual rate rose slightly.”
