Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the chart’s broad subject and notes that car crime has the highest perceived figure, but it does not adequately summarise the main comparisons. It omits the key contrast between perceived and actual likelihood: perceived figures are much higher for every crime type, while actual rates remain around 2–4.5%. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: burglary is not the lowest perceived figure in 2009, and the actual figures do not all stay the same, as they rise slightly for burglary and violent crime. The response is also 10 words below the 150-word minimum. To improve, include a clear overview of the large perception–reality gap and compare both years across all three categories with accurate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs, and the sequence from car crime to burglary and violent crime is understandable. However, progression is limited: the first body paragraph combines several comparisons without a clear organising principle, and the second repeats the year-by-year pattern rather than completing a systematic comparison. Linking words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “While” and “Moreover” provide some connection, but several are awkwardly placed or do not clearly show the relationship between ideas. For example, “While the lowest percentage is of burglary in year 2009” is not clearly connected to the preceding statement. Grouping perceived figures together and actual figures together would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, using relevant terms such as “perceived,” “actual,” “percentage” and “violent crime.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. Examples include “has its peak ratio,” “car cime perceived,” and “stays stable at a similier point.” Spelling errors such as “illutrates,” “cime” and “similier” also reduce accuracy. Use standard chart language, such as “the highest proportion,” “the perceived likelihood of car crime,” and “remained broadly unchanged.” More precise vocabulary for describing increases, decreases and comparisons would help make the report clearer and more appropriate to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “While” and “However,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and sentence construction appear in examples such as “the car crime has its peak ratio” and “Violent crime have the percentage of 15.” There are also problems with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “in year 2009” and the run-together transition “crimes.While.” The sentence “There are actual in 2009 and 2010 are same” is particularly difficult to understand because its structure and verb forms are faulty. Most sentences rely on simple patterns, and attempts to combine comparisons are often inaccurate. Practise forming clear comparative sentences with consistent past-tense verbs and correct subject–verb agreement.
