Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph shows a comparison of perceived danger and actual likelihood of becoming a victim of crime by the types of crimes. I need to summarise and compare in this task.

Overall, the percentage of car crime is the highest of all and the other two is almost the same. The percentages had decreased over a year.

The perceived rate of car crime is around 22%,burglary and violent crime is around 16% in 2009 to 2010. But the actual rate is noticingly lower the car crime is 4%, burlgary is 2% and violent crime is around 3%. Which clearly shows that the becoming a actual crime victim is lower than the perceived ones.

In 2010 to 2011 most of the statistics have dropped. On the other hand, burglary went from 2% to around 2.5% and violent crime was 3% in last year but it increased a little bit. In the last year the perceived values were pretty high but in 2010/2011 all of them lost 3% or more. Also actual value of car crime has decreased.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main contrast: perceived risk is much higher than actual victimisation, and car crime has the highest figures. You also report several relevant values, including the 2009/10 perceived rates and the small rises in actual burglary and violent crime. However, the overview is imprecise: “the percentages had decreased over a year” overlooks that actual burglary and violent crime increased, while actual car crime stayed roughly level. The claim that “most of the statistics have dropped” is broadly right but would be clearer if you distinguished perceived from actual figures and stated that perceived rates fell for all three crimes. Some comparisons, especially the changes in car crime, are unclear or inaccurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the two years. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is uneven, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, “In 2010 to 2011 most of the statistics have dropped” is followed by increases in two actual rates, so the contrast needs a clearer transition and explanation. The sentence beginning “But the actual rate…” is also joined awkwardly to the next sentence, while “In the last year” is ambiguous about which year you mean. Organise the details consistently by series or crime type, and use precise references such as “in 2010/11” to make comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the basic comparison, including “perceived,” “actual,” “percentage,” and “victim of crime.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes some details harder to interpret. “The percentage of car crime” should refer to the perceived or actual rate, rather than the crime itself; “noticingly lower” is not an appropriate expression; and “lost 3% or more” is an imprecise way to describe a fall in percentage points. There are also spelling errors such as “burlgary.” Aim for accurate chart language—particularly “rate,” “figure,” “fell,” and “rose”—and check spelling and collocations before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between figures difficult to follow. For example, “the other two is almost the same” has an agreement error, while “burglary and violent crime is around 16%” also needs a plural verb. The fragment “Which clearly shows…” cannot stand as a complete sentence, and “But the actual rate is noticingly lower the car crime is…” lacks clear sentence structure and punctuation. Tense and phrasing are also uneven in “the percentages had decreased” and “violent crime was 3% in last year.” Practise forming complete comparison sentences, checking subject–verb agreement, and using consistent past-tense reporting.
